Pick your pumpkin’s personality

1. Classic Grin

Difficulty: Easy · Template: PDF page 1

Triangle eyes and a big toothy smile make this a Halloween favorite. Choose this one for a traditional front-porch jack-o’-lantern.

2. Happy Little Pumpkin

Difficulty: Easy · Template: PDF page 2

Round eyes and a wide smile give this pumpkin a cheerful personality. Pair it with mums and a few smaller pumpkins for a welcoming fall display.

3. Surprised Boo

Difficulty: Easy · Template: PDF page 3

Two wide eyes and an oval mouth create a playful surprised expression. Its three simple openings make it a good choice when you want fewer details.

4. Winking Jack

Difficulty: Easy–moderate · Template: PDF page 4

Give your pumpkin a little attitude with one open eye, one wink, and a crooked smile. Cut the wink slowly to keep its corners neat.

5. Spooky Scowl

Difficulty: Moderate · Template: PDF page 5

Angled eyes and a jagged mouth bring the spooky factor. Leave generous pumpkin flesh between the eyes and mouth, and take your time with the zigzags.

6. Friendly Vampire

Difficulty: Moderate · Template: PDF page 6

A smiling vampire is just spooky enough for Halloween night. The two fangs are uncut pumpkin flesh connected to the top edge of the mouth.

How to use your printable pumpkin templates

  1. Pick your pumpkin. Look for a firm pumpkin with a stable base and a smooth area for the face.
  2. Print your favorite. Use US Letter paper. Start at 100% scale, then shrink or enlarge the print to fit your pumpkin. Leave space around the face and between the openings.
  3. Prep and scoop. Have an adult make the access opening and scoop out the seeds and stringy flesh. Dry the outside before attaching the paper.
  4. Transfer the pattern. Tape the template in place, making small folds in blank areas so it follows the curve. Have an adult mark the outlines with small pinholes, then remove the paper.
  5. Carve the black shapes. Work slowly with tools designed for pumpkin carving. White areas stay in place—including the teeth and fangs. Let an adult handle sharp tools; kids can choose the design and help scoop.
  6. Light it up. Add a battery-operated light, close its battery compartment securely, and follow its instructions for placement and weather exposure.
